School Based Traineeship
School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships work differently in NSW and QLD so make sure you get the right info.
School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships allow school students to work 1 day a week. This gives students the chance to start training towards a recognised qualification while carrying out secondary school studies.
School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are generally for year 10, 11 and 12 students. Depending on the job you may have the option to work after school, on weekends and over school holidays as well as your one day during the week.
The ‘off the job’ training (theory) is completed at home, school or TAFE.
Completion of a school based qualification is based on passing your learning modules and undertaking the required hours on the job.
A successfully completed Traineeship will contribute to Year 12 results and you will receive a Certificate for a qualification that is recognised across Australia.
The really good part is you get paid for the time spent working.
Apprenticeships and Traineeships combine training with working in a real job, for a real boss, with a real salary.
There are two main differences between an Apprentice and a Trainee.
Apprenticeships
An Apprentice is trained in a trade and upon successful completion will become a qualified tradesperson. Trades such as Construction, Electrical, and Automotive Mechanics are a few that are a part of the Apprenticeship scheme and apprentices can end up working or running their own businesses as Builders, Electricians or Mechanics for example. Apprenticeships can take up to four years (Full Time) to complete, however in QLD some apprenticeships can be completed earlier depending on your TAFE attendance and results as well as passing your learning modules on the job.
Apprenticeships can be full-time, part-time (QLD only), or school-based.
Traineeships
A Trainee is someone who is being trained in a vocational area. These vocational areas include; Retail, Office Administration, Information technology, Horticulture and hospitality, and many others. Upon completion of a traineeship you will be eligible to receive a minimum of a certificate II in your chosen vocational area. Traineeships differ in length from 12 months to three years (Full Time). Traineeships can be full-time, part-time (QLD only), or school-based.
Eligibility requirements apply for all Traineeships and Apprenticeships. We can help you with this process. While applications are subject to a full eligibility assessment you can check some of the basic requirements here.
